"Ash Tree Cruel " Part 9: Ivy Slays Death's Fear A thumb's breadth from the seeker's naked breast, the dagger's descent was halted. Duo had freed his right wrist from the restraints just one second prior. His hand met the Tanist's fist, grappling with it. Forcing the ugly blade back with a strength born of desperation. He collapsed the joints of his left hand, then twisted them free, all in a breath's space. His legs still pinioned, spread upon the bloody stone. He leaned forward, both hands tangling with the Tanist's. Whilst his mind battled with hideous distorted visions. "Help me, you idiots!" the Tanist screamed toward his cowering minions. "Touch me at your peril," Duo snarled at them. "See you? My Liege Lady of the Moon has freed me. And she will strike you slavering mad the instant you dare interfere." "Liar!" the Tanist screeched again. The two of them tugged and pushed and pulled at the dagger between them, a bizarre wrestling match that was death for the loser. Even as Duo strained against his burly opponent, the boy felt his frozen strength faltering, failing. He spoke up, his voice hissing harshly. "Your master. The Tanist whom you poisoned. His hands squeeze the air from your throat now, even now. Feel his diabolical grip there? Do you doubt me? He wears the same robe he wore to dinner, the night you murdered him. You fed him a young river trout broiled with death angel mushroom admixed. Your master wore wool woven dark forest green. Remember? With the trim of spiral ivy leaves embroidered there. The cloth is draped over your left shoulder now. Drooping off his worm eaten corpse arms. Hugging you close to him. He ardently desires your eternal company in hell." The Tanist's eyes bulged from his skull. His massive shoulders shuddered, and he inadvertently cast a glance behind him. A harsh shout of triumph. A wrenching twist. Duo caught up the tumbled dagger. With it, slashed the final fetters, freeing himself from the icy stone. Swaying fully upright, he staggered from the blood ridden altar. Menacing the Tanist of Su with the gory dagger. "You cannot breathe. Your devil master squeezes your throat. You are throttled. Gasping for air." The Tanist sneered. "My lovely little lunatic. You really do see the dead. As well as hear them. Don't you? What a pity. I should like to keep you for my amusement. But I shall have to be satisfied with killing you slowly. Listening to your screams, your pleading for mercy. You should have accepted the gift of the swift blade when it was offered you. Now you will know true agony. I shall burn you with embers from the pyre. Strip your tender flesh from you, shred by shred. I promise you, little lunatic. You will beg to be granted your last breath." The towering, menacing form drew closer to the boy. Duo saw the pavement writhing under his numb feet. Felt the wintry night loosening his grip upon the knife haft. Heard the metallic clatter as the blade crashed to the flagstones. Noted his thinning life's blood dribbling from his wounded hand, plopping to the ground. A harsh hammer pulsed in his poor, confused mind. He dropped, but not far enough to escape. He felt himself lifted into the Tanist's angry grip. Lifted and flung down onto the crushing altar. Duo looked up at his fractured view. Of the malignant features overshadowing, shouting arrogantly down. "I care not for your Liege Lady of the Moon. The great god Su is more powerful than any other. Let the goddess come to me, Su's Tanist on Earth, and I'll couple with her whilst she screams to be pounded." He paused to laugh at the horrified gasps of his acolytes. Then continued his ranting boast. "And neither do I fear the dead. They are merely shades. Let them also come to me. Let them harm me if they can." With this invocation, the Tanist of Su stood triumphantly before the sacrificial altar. His feet spread wide, his fists upon his hips, framing his tumescent cock which tented his offal stained garments. Duo stared at the lurid vision. Behind the cult priest stood the ghost of the last Tanist. Leering ghastly at his victim, reaching through the bony thorax as if it were formed of mere mist. Tearing the heart out, gushing blood. The ghoul crammed the pounding, pulsing organ into his great gaping maw, and munched upon the macerated muscle. Astonishment. The Tanist of Su stared down at his own chest, the sternal notch. Slightly upward and to the left. The gush of blood fountaining there. The length of blade, the biting tip and foible, all protruding from his ribcage. His heart already slashed into razored halves, fluttered to its impotent halt. "Liar," he croaked. Then tumbled forward to sprawl next to the crouching boy. There before the altar stood Heero Yuy. All in a seething berserker fury. "Who is next to die?" he shouted at the cowardly throng of acolytes. Wrenched his sword from the quivering remains of the Tanist of Su. And beckoned fiercely. "Come you, to me. All of you, if you dare. I shall show you the true meaning of fear. Be not shy." The cowed gathering of acolytes backed warily away from this wrathful wraith of vengeance. But in the meantime, a hundred more poured from out of the forest maze they had been guarding. Their painted death skull faces snarling angrily. Summoned by one of the desperate minions, who had fled the gruesome scene. "Duo. Brave friend. We are most emphatically outnumbered. Cans't stand?" Yuy muttered. The boy, the death soul seeker, staggered to his feet one final time. Smiled softly, a small, crooked quirk of his whitened lips. "Follow thee to the grave, an' I have the strength," he whispered. "It seems we need not search far to find that," Heero replied grimly. Handed over the gory dagger. Grasped the boy round his waist and held fast. As their enemies closed in on them. ~ * ~ tbc....
